Light emitting materials are known as phosphors. These materials when excited suitably can emit light. Depending on the type of excitation the luminescence is termed accordingly. For example, exciting the phosphor by high energy photons (UV) to get low energy photons (visible) is known as photoluminescence. This physical process is called down conversion. This is taking place in the fluorescent lamps (Tube light, and CFL). In this talk I will discuss the different types of luminescence phenomena, phosphors, and their applications in different fields.
